Sony’s continuing to roll out the PlayStation 5 in key territories, with India receiving the system earlier this month and China next on the docket. While the system released in November 2020 for much of the world, Chinese retailers were forced to sell import units to local customers, commanding prices up to four times higher than the MSRP.
Now the manufacturer has confirmed that an official PS5 launch is planned for China in Q2 2021, as posted on social media. Video game analyst Daniel Ahmad shared the news on Twitter:
While the system is set for official release, it’s worth remembering that software will need to be approved on an individual basis. As a result, it’s likely that online services will be operated using a region lock at launch, although that’s yet to be officially confirmed by the manufacturer.

Oh no Chinese scalping vids will start to appear will we ever escape from the endless scalping and the vids and articles that follow them.
I don’t really understand the exclamation ‘finally’ in the title of this story. Do you, or do we have any vested interest in the release of the console in China? Or in Sony shares? Or is there a significant chinese userbase of your site I’m not aware of? Sorry for my ignorance.
weird decision dropping their stock price down. i would push for stock allocation..some countries have received below 1000 units so far believe it or not..i have a 100 person psn friendlist and only 3-4 of them own a ps5.
Congratulations on another billion people not being able to buy a PS5!
If it feels good, do it. That’s what I say, anyway.
@Medic_Alert video games are big business in China, making up about 25% of revenue generated by the $100 billion video game industry. The market is massive and growing.
With that said, your question is an excellent one. Considering the state of the world, production shortages and the historical rollout of consoles and media in general, who is pushing for this and why, right now?
Combine @NEStalgia astute observations of potentially funny numbers concerning shortages and it’s hard not to take a second look at what’s going on here.
Obviously not to be used to organise any kind of disent or negativity towards the ruling CCP.
Wouldn't that make a interesting news story, revolution in China organised via PS5 chat and gaming.
@Futureshark unfortunately a digital medium such as “chat and gaming” if anything only facilitates China’s expanding social credit system.
@zebric21 same for me about 80 friends and only 3 are on a ps5. I would be too but...you know.
@Jimmer-jammer Ahh, suddenly things start making more sense.... Repeated statements of significantly more launch inventory than for PS4 followed up with numbers showing it was the same number. Right hand, meet left hand. Left, right. The folks that knew the production inventory didn't know where they were going and when. All that "significantly more" must be earmarked for the China launch, which easily could equal the number of launch units worldwide depending on how they do their launch. The imports probably explain some of the scalping as well, though China importing consoles isn't new.
XSX is also supposedly launching in China, so both companies are being compelled into that market either by investors or by China "encouraging them to do so" in their manufacturing contracts.
I do wonder how profitable that avenue will be though. Certainly, most of their games aren't going to be compatible. Or does gaming now become like the film industry where all the games are edited and produced in accordance with Chinese interest and approval producing an insipid and mind-numbing medium?
How's your Mandarin? Each day that goes by, it feels more and more like we're going to need it sooner rather than later....
I don't particularly care so long as CCP doesn't get access to my personal data.
The can build a wall and lock their own users in for all I care.
@Medic_Alert
I agree with your line of thinking. If they're lucky, they will get maybe 100K consoles in a country of billions of people.
Crazy to think that the country where these PS5s get made, doesn't sell them officially.
@Netret0120 mainly because companies can't launch products without strict guidelines over content and vice like grip over access to user data.
Take Pooh Bear as an example. Banned, because their fat, sensitive baby of a leader doesn't like the comparison that's made between him and a children's cartoon by dissenters of his regime.
The country is a absolute cesspit of corruption and human rights abuses.
@NEStalgia I knew you’d sum it up better than I could 👍 Sony’s willingness to dabble in censorship tells me they’re probably as much of a wet noodle as GOG when the chips are down...unfortunately my mandarin skills go about as far as peeling an orange in one piece.
Forget China! Send those extra units to the UK please
Don't worry, maybe 5 will be sold, before china tries to reverse engineer it and put out a cheaper, generic version. Like they do with everything.
It is well documented that Asia (including Japan sadly) prefer mobile devices and PCs to play games on compared to consoles. So with the massive demand globally for PS5s (except Asia), mixed with massive stock shortages and Xbox releasing its new Series in these stock deprived countries, so it appears to me is that Sony's best approach is to catch the market share of those countries who actually want to play consoles instead of losing that market share to its competitors because they were chasing after a market share that isn't keen on consoles anyway
On a side note, I should be in Shangai as soon as the UK lock down ends and the Chinese embassy reopens, so maybe I should become a scrapper and sell my PS5 on for 4 times the amount I paid 'ooohahaha' (evil villain laugh while rubbing hands)
I don’t think they should call it the PS5 in China. The original PlayStation was never released there and I don’t think PS2 or PS3 did either. If PS4 was the first Playstation released in China they should call it the PS2 there.
I'm sorry but how about being able to supply the demand there is already in the rest of the world???
It should 'launch' in countries first where it has already 'launched'.
@NEStalgia,
Must be some manufacturing contract agreement, as Sony must realize these consoles are needed in the U.S and Europe much more.
